INTRO TO POWERBOATING
Through classroom instruction and on-the-water practice, you will be introduced to safe powerboating concepts and skills on the calm waters of Mission Bay. Time behind the wheel will give you confidence and a solid foundation to safely continue your powerboat operation education.
What Will I Learn?
Participants will gain hands-on experience operating a basic powerboat in protected waters. Participants will drive 13’ powerboats with a 25 horsepower outboard motor. Topics covered include:

Is this the right class for me?
This class is perfect for new boat owners or anyone interested in learning the basics of safely operating a small powerboat. With ample time behind the wheel of a boat, participants will build confidence and gain hands-on experience and feedback from a US Coast Guard-licensed instructor. While this class does not satisfy the proof of education requirement necessary to earn a California Boaters card, you will receive step-by-step instructions on obtaining a California Boaters card. If you are looking to gain more practice, refine your skills, or focus on a specific powerboating topic or skill, we suggest a powerboat private lesson.
Requirements

This is an entry-level class with no required prerequisites or prior boating experience.

This class is open to all participants aged 16 and up.

A general liability waiver is required to participate. Anyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.

Participants must acknowledge that they are water-safe (able to swim 50 meters and comfortably tread water).
How to Prepare

Bring sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. MBAC has a water bottle refilling station and there are some restaurants nearby, but keep in mind that food and drink are not available for purchase at MBAC. Lockers and showers are available for customer use.

What's Next?
After participating in the Intro to Powerboating class, we encourage you to take a powerboat private lesson to build and expand your skills. More specific practice on the water will improve your confidence and decision-making behind the wheel of a boat. Lessons can dive into further topics such as operating an inboard boat, anchoring, trailering, towing other boats, and more!
